The Biggest Name in Coaching Credentials Published a Future Where Clients Stop Checking Credentials
Buried in the ICF's own 76-page futures report is a scenario where verified skills replace association badges — nine days before Converge opens in Washington.

Somewhere inside a 76-page foresight document, the organisation that credentials most of the world's professional coaches describes a future in which clients no longer bother with its credential.
It is listed, quietly, as a signal.
The report points to reputation-based social networks such as DeSo and verifiable digital credential wallets like Workday and Curity, which it says allow clients to select a coach "based on verified skills, bypassing traditional associations."
That is the ICF writing about the ICF.
What Scenario 1 actually says
The 2026 ICF Coaching Futures Report is the first of its kind from the ICF Thought Leadership Institute. It explores five drivers of change and four possible futures for the profession by 2036, built on a 2x2 of two forces the ICF calls the most volatile: pace of technological adoption and degree of global collaboration.
High tech plus low collaboration produces Scenario 1: Digital First, Human Optional.
By 2036 in that world, coaching runs inside a largely autonomous, algorithm-driven ecosystem. The landscape is fragmented, with a spectrum running from hyper-personalised algorithmic coaching down to "less expensive transactional models with fewer regulations."
Clients in that scenario prefer short, on-demand sessions personalised in real time by AI, buy through subscription or pay-per-session models, and lean on text-based chatbots via mobile.
And the ICF? The report has it becoming one of many bodies stewarding ethics frameworks in a decentralised industry.
One of many.
The fair reading
This is a scenario, not a forecast, and the report says so repeatedly. The four futures are framed as strategic tools to challenge assumptions and build adaptive capacity — the stated goal is readiness, not accuracy.
CEO Magdalena Nowicka Mook has made the same point. The report does not attempt to predict the future, she writes, and "futures thinking is a responsibility of any organization and its leadership to anticipate opportunities or obstacles."
Fine. But most trade bodies commission futures work that ends with the trade body still at the centre. This one models its own displacement and prints the vendor names.
So is the renewal an asset or a sunk cost
The maths is not abstract. ICF credentials renew on a three-year cycle. All three levels require 40 CCE credits, at least 24 in core competencies including 3 in ethics, ACC holders add 10 hours of mentor coaching, and the renewal fee is $175 for members and $275 for non-members. Annual membership runs $245.
Nothing in Scenario 1 says a credential becomes worthless. It says verification migrates — to wallets, to platforms, to peer-verified reputation layers clients already use for everything else. The report describes peer-verified reputation systems and decentralised learning platforms reshaping how professionals demonstrate credibility.
The ACC letters hold value for as long as the buyer is an HR department. They hold less the moment the buyer is a procurement platform reading a skills graph.
Nine days
ICF Converge 2026 runs October 28-30 at the Marriott Marquis in Washington, D.C., with programming opening at 1 p.m. on the Wednesday. Organisers expect 1,300-plus coaching professionals and more than 70 sessions. Future Trends is one of six official content themes.
Whether anyone on that stage says the word "bypassing" out loud is a separate question.

Editor’s note: Every coach paying renewal fees deserves to know their own association has published a scenario in which the credential stops being the thing clients check.
