The Recording Is Going Away. Soon Your ICF Credential Will Rest on One Mentor's Signature.

From April 2027, ACC and PCC portfolio candidates stop sending ICF a recorded session. A named mentor coach you hire signs off instead.

The dreaded recording is on its way out. What replaces it is a person you have to find, vet, pay and work with for at least three months.

Here is the change, plainly. From April 1, 2027, ACC and PCC Portfolio candidates stop submitting a Performance Evaluation recording — competence is demonstrated through enhanced mentor coaching documented by an MCS mentor coach. MCC Performance Evaluation remains.

That second sentence matters. Master Certified Coach candidates still record. Everyone below them does not.

Two dates, two different jobs

The deadlines are easy to mix up because they do separate things.

January 1, 2027 is about who may mentor you. Beginning January 1, 2027, mentor coaching completed for a credential or the renewal of a credential must be completed with a mentor who holds an ICF Mentor Coach Specialization (MCS) at the level to which they wish to be mentored. The level match is literal: an MCS-ACC holder can only mentor ACC candidates.

April 1, 2027 is about how you are judged. A Competency Review Form completed by a qualified mentor coach goes into the credential application and replaces the performance evaluation recordings and transcripts, while candidates keep Session Observation Forms on file for each session the mentor coach reviewed.

If you already did your hours, relax. Until January 1, 2027 current requirements remain in effect, and mentor coaching hours obtained before that date will still be accepted for new credential applications and for renewal.

Renewals are caught too, which is the part coaches keep missing. Beginning January 1, 2027, ACC renewal candidates, as well as any PCC or MCC renewal candidate using mentor coaching for professional development, must work with a qualified mentor coach. The volume itself is untouched: 10 hours of mentor coaching, spread over at least 3 months, including a minimum of 3 one-to-one hours.

The gatekeeper now has a name and an invoice

Under the old system, an anonymous assessor you never met scored your tape. That role is being dismantled for the two most common credentials. With the transition away from the Performance Evaluation requirement, the assessor role will no longer be needed for new ACC and PCC Portfolio applications beginning April 2027. For MCC candidates, the requirement and the assessor role both stay.

ICF's own framing of the logic, as quoted by MCC and longtime assessor Carly Anderson: "The result is a shift from a single, high-stakes performance assessment to a formative evaluation model."

There is a reason ICF thinks the mentor side needed policing. In a recent ICF survey of mentor coach practitioners, 68% said clients struggle to understand what high-quality mentor coaching should look and feel like.

And a new paid tier appears

The specialization is cheap to apply for and not cheap to qualify for.

Introductory pricing runs through March 2027 at $50 for ICF members and $125 for non-members; from April 2027 it becomes $125 and $200. There is one application fee and one renewal fee regardless of whether you hold the MCS at one, two or all three levels.

The training behind it is the real expense. The Standard Path requires an active PCC, MCC or renewed ACC in good standing plus at least 41 hours of mentor coaching education aligned to the ICF Mentor Coaching Competencies. Retiring assessors get a shortcut: ICF offers a Credit for Prior Learning pathway.

Providers have already priced the gap. Tandem Coaching Academy lists two routes to MCS from $299 and 2027 cohorts at $2,997.

For candidates, the cost lands in the hourly rate. Standalone mentor coaching typically ranges from $100 to $300 per hour depending on the mentor's credential level and experience. Visibility consolidates fast, too: only those with an MCS will appear on the Mentor Coach Registry after January 1, 2027.

The dates are already being reported wrong

Brent O'Bannon, MCC, published a widely shared explainer stating that beginning January 1, 2027, coaches pursuing an ACC or PCC through applicable pathways will no longer submit a recorded coaching session for Performance Evaluation, completing Enhanced Mentor Coaching instead. ICF's own announcement puts that swap three months later: beginning April 2027, ACC and PCC Portfolio applicants will provide standard mentor coaching forms with their application, in place of the Performance Evaluation requirement.

UK mentor coach and assessor Cath Daley, now MCS-qualified at all three levels, says coaches are struggling with exactly this. She writes that if you have found yourself slightly confused by the different dates and changing terminology, you are certainly not alone.

One more thing nobody at ICF has addressed in writing. The recording was the artifact that proved a human sat in the chair and coached. As of this year, ICF's documented credentialing requirements specify the recorded-session format and the competency standard but do not enumerate AI tools, and ICF has not published AI-specific credentialing guidance. Read into that what you like. The practical question for 2027 is smaller and more urgent: is your mentor coach MCS, at your level, before January.

Editor’s note: Thousands of credentialed coaches have a January and an April deadline in 2027 plus a cost nobody budgeted for — and the explainers circulating in the industry already disagree on the dates.
