The Coaching Times

The daily read for coaches, consultants and speakers building a business on what they know.

Post-Mortem

Julien Smith Raised $10 Million to Run Coaches' Businesses. Then He Sent the Email.

Three coaching platforms died in one year. The ones still standing have one thing in common — and it isn't funding.

On November 3, 2025, coaches who ran their entire practice inside Practice.do tried to log in and found the door locked.

No read-only mode. No grace period. The client portals, scheduling links and stored contracts inside the platform went with it.

The warning had come weeks earlier. In October 2025, CEO Julien Smith announced the platform would wind down, writing that "The company was not where we needed it to be to sustain itself."

This was not a small startup nobody had heard of. Practice.do raised $10 million. Its backers included Andrew Chen at a16z, Tony Robbins, Lenny Rachitsky, Nikita Bier and Sahil Bloom, among dozens of other angels. An acquisition that might have kept the platform alive fell through, and the team chose to wind down rather than keep operating at a loss.

Then it happened again

Six weeks later, coaches on Profi got their own version of the email. Profi said it was in the process of being acquired, that it was winding down the current version of the platform, and that customers would keep full access through December 31, 2025 — after which the platform would be retired in its current form. That notice is still sitting on profi.io today.

Profi had raised money too. An $8 million seed round, led by its existing investors, announced as fuel for growth.

Profi closed operations on December 31, 2025, after being acquired and wound down. Users had a few weeks of notice and then the platform was gone.

And a third one barely registered. Counting Nudge Coach, which went first, three coaching platforms shut down in 2025. Nudge Coach's domain now redirects to a parked page, and a September 2026 recheck of all three found none of them has a working product.

The detail coaches are still angry about

CoachAccountable, a competitor that absorbed a wave of refugees from both shutdowns, described what actually happened at the customer level: short notice for the broader customer base, tells that came first from larger customers, and a final day when the login simply stopped working without advance warning.

Its import tool for Practice.do export files was ready one day after the doors were bolted. One day too late for anyone who hadn't exported.

The uncomfortable pattern

The platforms that died had investors. The ones still running mostly don't.

CoachAccountable is on its 13th birthday and describes itself as "lovingly crafted in St. Louis, Missouri by some guy." Life Coach Hub, founded in 2010, has 15 years of continuous development behind it. Paperbell, bootstrapped and profitable, says it has served coaches for five years and processed over $40 million.

The advice coming out of the wreckage is blunt. CoachAccountable told coaches this was a good moment to check the funding model and employee count of their platform — impatient investors and a headcount north of 50 being the warning signs. Life Coach Hub put it more simply: bootstrapped or genuinely profitable platforms feel safer right now than VC-funded ones.

What to actually check this week

Open your platform's homepage and look for a signup button. Its absence was the public smoke signal that tipped CoachAccountable off about Profi.

Then find the export function. Run it. If you can't produce a file containing your client list, session notes and signed contracts in under ten minutes, that is the finding.

Then check whether client payments run through your own Stripe account or the platform's.

Picking where your client relationships live off the cheapest slot on a listicle is a poor method. The coaches who learned that in November spent a weekend rebuilding a business they thought they already owned.

Editor’s note: Three platforms died in a year and most coaches still don't know which category their own software falls into. This one makes readers go check.
