OpenAI's Ad Policy Has a Line About "Health Coaching." Read It Before You Budget for ChatGPT Ads.
A billion-dollar ad channel opened in under 200 days. Whether your coaching offer can buy into it depends on one sentence.

Five words inside OpenAI's ad policy decide whether you can buy your way into ChatGPT: "services such as health coaching."
They appear in the section on unsupported wellness claims. The policy lists advertising for diet pills, detox programs, supplements marketed with unsupported health claims outside major retail channels, and services such as health coaching. Not prohibited outright in every form, but named, flagged, and sitting on the wrong side of a line most coaches don't know exists.
Which matters more than usual right now, because the channel is real.
The fastest new ad channel in years
OpenAI said on August 31 that ChatGPT Ads had reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in less than 200 days. The platform is used by tens of thousands of advertisers and is available in more than 40 countries. Self-serve access to Ads Manager also opened to eligible advertisers in Europe, meaning startups and small businesses can build campaigns without going through an agency.
The format is the part that should interest coaches. OpenAI's pitch is that people arrive at ChatGPT already partway through a decision, and the ad feeds into an existing conversation rather than a separate results page. Someone typing "how do I find an executive coach for a first-time VP" is a very different lead than a cold interest-targeted impression on Instagram.
The doorway: digital products and education
Here is the sentence that decides most of it. During the early phases of advertising, OpenAI says it is focused on a limited set of consumer categories, including household and consumer goods, local services, travel and entertainment, and digital products and education.
A course. A cohort program. A membership. A B2B leadership training contract. Those read as education and digital products, which is the open lane. One policy analysis notes most B2B software sits comfortably inside "digital products," provided the creative meets the content standards.
Business coaches, sales coaches, career coaches selling training: you have a plausible route in.
The health side is a different building
Ads for regulated medical products and services, or claims about the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of physical or mental health conditions, are restricted, and ads for health services outside the US are generally prohibited. Inside the US, OpenAI says it may allow ads from approved advertisers case by case, and advertisers may be required to provide proof of licensure.
There is a narrower safe harbour underneath it. General wellness and lifestyle advertising may be permitted where no medical claims are made, such as fitness equipment or workout programs and general nutrition products. A workout program is closer to allowed than a metabolic reset protocol.
Then the clause that catches people who think they can just rewrite the ad copy: advertisers whose primary business model or offerings fall within restricted or prohibited categories may be ineligible to advertise at all. A clean creative from a business the policy classifies as restricted still fails.
Nobody buys into a mental-health conversation
OpenAI added "mental and personal health conversations" to the sensitive contexts where ads cannot run. That applies regardless of the advertiser's category.
So the fantasy some mindset coaches have been floating — appear at the exact moment someone tells ChatGPT they're burned out — is the one placement the system is built to prevent.
Before the budget meeting
Audit the landing page, not only the ad. Review covers creative and landing pages both, and an ad can be rejected because the destination introduces a prohibited category or an unsupportable claim. The testimonial page promising a client reversed her insomnia is a policy problem.
Temper the forecast too. One buyer reported far more impressions than expected but a clickthrough rate around 0.6%, against the 2% he'd expect from search. Emarketer AI analyst Nate Elliott called the milestone "both incredibly impressive and terribly disappointing."
And check the rules again on launch day. OpenAI published its ad policies in March 2026 and revised them four times in the following five months. A category closed when the media plan is written can be open by the time it runs.
