Your Free Live Training Can Now Be an Ad While It's Still Running

Instagram switched on live video ads September 29 and added an in-app Boost button days later. The free masterclass just stopped being a closed room.

The free live training has always had one hard ceiling: only the people who already follow you can show up.

That ceiling moved last week.

On September 18, 2026, Meta announced that live video ads, already running on Facebook, would become generally available on Instagram starting September 29. The format turns an active livestream into a paid Partnership Ad that reaches users beyond the creator's followers in Stories, Reels and Feed.

Then it got simpler. On September 30, Social Media Today reported that Instagram had added an option for creators to boost live videos as ads directly from the livestream composer — rather than only boosting the replay after the broadcast ends.

No separate creative. The broadcast is the ad.

What Instagram actually built

The mechanics are blunt, and that's the interesting part. Instagram's own description: "Boosting your live video to make it an ad may help more people on Instagram discover it. Your live video is used as the ad creative, and your ad can be shown in Feed, Stories and Instagram Reels."

Creators tap Boost inside the livestream composer, choose a target audience or accept Instagram's suggested one, and set a start and end time. You can boost right before going live or schedule in advance, and Instagram recommends scheduling at least two hours ahead to reduce ad delivery delays.

The promotion only runs while you're actually broadcasting — the idea being that these ads put in-progress livestreams in front of users who are active right now.

This is not new capability so much as new speed. Creators could already build ads for Instagram Live broadcasts in Meta Ads Manager; what changed is that the boost launches from the in-app composer instead of a full campaign setup.

Why coaches should care more than ecommerce brands

Most of the coverage has been about live shopping. Fine. But look at what the format rewards.

A boosted live ad only exists while you are on air. Scroll past, and it's gone. There is no replay to fall back on, no evergreen funnel absorbing the spend. The budget buys one thing: bodies in the room, in real time.

That is exactly the problem the free masterclass has. Registrations are easy. Live attendance is where launches die. A paid lever that works only on live attendance is a strange and useful fit for a webinar-driven business.

It also changes the opening. If you are paying to drop cold strangers into minute 14 of a broadcast, the ten-minute "let's wait for everyone to join" warm-up becomes paid dead air.

The fine print, printed

Availability is the catch. General availability was scheduled to start rolling out September 29, but as of October 1, Meta's live shopping page still described Instagram live video ads as in beta — so availability varies by account. Check your account before you build an October launch around this.

There is also a follower floor to think about. In Meta's South Korean rollout of Instagram Live ads, the format is available to professional or creator accounts with at least 1,000 followers. Instagram already restricted livestreaming itself to accounts with at least 1,000 followers in 2025.

And if you're doing this as a brand-creator deal rather than boosting your own stream, the plumbing matters. Live video ads run as Partnership Ads, meaning the brand amplifies the creator's live content, and the creator must grant ad access through Meta Business Manager before the campaign can go live. Meta has also named five US live-commerce platform partners — CommentSold, Firework, LiveMeUp, Sprii and TalkShopLive — whose creators can have livestreams converted into promotable ad units without manual setup mid-session.

The practical test for this month is small: run the masterclass you were already running, schedule the boost two hours out, hold a modest budget, and watch one number — how many people in the room never followed you.

If that number is meaningful, your webinar just became a traffic channel instead of a list-harvesting exercise.

Editor’s note: A brand-new paid lever sitting directly on top of the free live training — the single most important asset in most coaching launches — and almost nobody in the industry has noticed it yet.
